Bloodshot Eyes

Not all bloodshot eyes
are caused by the demon
known as Mr Alcohol.
There are times when
sleepless nights of worry
pacing the floor at midnight
waiting for a loved one
who is late beyond compare
or times when love
is entangled in a snare
and two hearts that beat as one
start drifting apart.
Then in the long darkness
and the ache of longing
keeps you from your sleep
and you get the prize
of looking in the mirror
with those bloodshot eyes.
