Hobo Clown

As the lights go down
the hobo clown
whistles a tune
while the rain pours down
his happy face
turned into a sad one
an autum wind
reminded him
that the circus had come and gone
so he opened a pack of Captain Blacks
and fired up the first one

His clothes are ragged
and his hat is torn
his red wig is missing hairs
he may be laughing
he may be crying
no one knows
or really cares
his belly is empty
his heart is full
he knows where he belongs
so he jumps aboard that southbound train
and whistles his favourite song

He falls to sleep
and he dreams
of all the pretty girls
he's known throughout his life
though his dreams are sweet
his aching feet
irritate him in the night

He wakes to the sound of thunder
and can't think of the reason why
his life has turned out like it has
then he hangs his head and cries
he drifts off to a deeper sleep
more peaceful than before
when he woke
there was a stranger there
standing in the box car door

The man spoke and said
you are here at last
this is meant to be
no more playing the part of a hobo clown
whistling tunes for money
you lived a good life my friend
and now you are not alone
no more travelling on trains
or sleeping in tents
now you have a home
