Youthful Yearning

Was e'er a light more prettily displayed
Than that which on a virgin's features played
Whose innocence was paused in tempting pose
That broke the heart of e'en the fairest rose
What sweetness e'er was on a fruit bestow'd
That effortlessly from that vestal flow'd
Enchanting all whose voices whisper'd low
Once helplessly entrapped within her glow
What futile gambits once were used in vain
What hopes did gallant suitors entertain
When with insouciance their hearts were spurn'd
And wistful glances oft were unreturn'd
As ages passed with unrelenting haste
And sapience the youthfulness replaced
How many hearts once spurned can still recall
That radiance that held them in her thrall

Susan P. Bagley
Very nicely penned verse, perfectly flowing and depicting youthful virginity and coyness of a maiden who has the capacity to enrapture and yet spurn tender yearning hearts.
