Summer Evening

A thin slice of luminous moon
hangs over the silhouettes of trees
in the not quite dark
between indeterminate pinkness
hesitating along the horizon
and deep blue above;
stars are not out yet,
but a planet is in evidence.
As the world hovers between day
and night
I am aware
that time never stands still,
this summer will turn to autumn,
this year will end
and another begin,
and I shall not be here for ever.
But for now I am content
to enjoy the peace
of this summer evening.

I often feel as you've just described. To make those moments eternal in our minds yet the realization that we will be gone. Loved it!

Twilight is my favourite time of day and in this poem you've captured not only its quiet beauty but have given it special meaning in your contemplation of the turning world, the cycle of seasons, the unstoppable wheel of time and how very fragile and impermanent our littles lives are. :) kath xxx

A really heartfelt description of a summer evening, Sir. Death is the culmination of our life-cycle but the seasons will keep on cycling, but to feel each of these wonderful seasons is totally worth our lives and the skill to put it into words makes it so much more memorable. Great poem.

An eloquent poem on life's summer-ending...the imagery in your opening stanza lines reads nice in its allegoric richness

This admirably wrought, breathtakingly beautiful poem taps into one's mortality with its majestic, linguistic portrait of nature in all her glory. A poem that's brought a tear to my eye - perfect!

The description of change so gracefully phrased has the touch of pathos at just the right place. A fine verse Paul.
