A long separation from the one I love.

PANTHER IN THE NIGHT

I slept on your side of the bed last night,
the cat in the crook of my right arm
the dog at my feet.
I even got up and went outside
to look at the moon but nothing worked.
The howl of my longing just wouldn't go away.
It prowled around the house like a hungry panther
turning over every memory of you
for a morsel of your presence.
I guess I forgot to ask you
to put your arm around me in the night.
