expectations

Thinking, once upon a time
I knew what to expect
From the mysteries of life and love
My heart did not protect

But laid it rather at your feet
A brightly burning prize
To warm you in this hard, cold world
With passion undisguised

Sadly, it was not enough
And never could have been
To satisfy the monster
That lives beneath your skin

Or maybe it was just too much
The love I tried to share
And threatened to disturb the mask
That you still choose to wear

When living lies supplant the truth
When darkness hides the sun
My soul will cry, forevermore
As from your love I run

I thought I knew, so long ago
What loving you would mean
My expectations were so high
The fall killed all my dreams
