The love story of Saleem-Anarkali is legendary . There are many versions to it.One version goes like this :

Akbar (Saleem’s ) father after defeating his son orders Anarkali to leave his son failing which he would not hesitate to even kill his own son .

Anarkali has no other choice but to agree , but she requests Akbar whether she could spend just one night with Saleem after which she would disappear from his life .

After spending the last night with Saleem, she drugs him with pomegranate blossom.

This is her state of mind just before leaving Saleem .

Inspired after reading a couple of fabulous poems by my very good friend Leonard Dabydeen.

Anarkali (Poemegranate Blossom)

Fie Fie this dawn
Awaken not my knight
With your ochre noise

Hush
Sush
There sleeps he

Stealthily
I place this tear
Just beneath his sleep

Hush
Sush
There dreams he

Fie Fie this dawn
Mock not our plight
With your yellow breeze

Hush
Sush
there wakes he...

Excellent write, Sri. How stealthily you have set the scene for the ' Poemegranate Blossom ' . Soothing to the read in each stanza. Remarkably well written. Special thanks to you for acknowledging me - true friends, indeed. BTW the play itself was great. Anarkali was trying to come to Canada after escaping from the dungeon...found Prince Saleem on Facebook ( so comically amusing !!). But the songs took me back in time to the 1950's... Blessings.

First of all, thank you for the legend. My hobby is to collect such from all over the world because they keep such immortal values. Then, let me greet you for the incredible music and the wisdom of your poem. It was a fantastic experience to both read and feel it.
