Grandma...

Grandma... who’s gonna teach me how to read

those funny books with all those pictures?

It was the best part of the day!

It was early in the morning

after all the cleaning was done.

We sat in the sunshine on the bed

‘cos that’s where kitty was!

She loved story time too!

Grandma... who’s gonna tell me about

what it was like when you were a little girl?

Your stories were funny like

the ones in the books we loved to read together.

You always made me laugh

‘cos you made silly sounds with your mouth.

Grandma...who’s gonna help me grow up

to be a big girl

like you always told me I would be?

You said I would be pretty and smart

and I would be able to knit like you!

Grandma...who’s gonna teach me how?

You told me “One day, when all the stories have been told,

Grandma will teach you to knit.”

We always kept reading and telling stories

and laughing out loud.

Grandma...we had so much fun with those stories

I think we forgot to stop

so you could teach me to knit!

Kitty wanted to learn too;

she loved playing with all your balls of wool.

Grandma...who will sit with me on the bed

and sing and laugh and knit with me?

How will I know what the books are saying

if you aren’t here with me anymore?

I don’t know how to read yet.

Grandma...Mommy told me that you’re gone

and you’re not coming back.

She told me you went to heaven,

just like you showed me in the books

we liked to read together all the time.

Grandma...I miss you!

Mommy and I cry together on the bed now,

and we tell stories about how much we love you.

She said it’s still okay to talk about you

and that you will always be my Grandma.

I need to ask you one more thing, okay?

Grandma...why does heaven have to keep you?

A sweet innocent reflection from the eyes and mind of a child. This is beautiful and a well penned poem of feelings from beginning to end. I knew one grandma growing up.
