To Love by ilo1940

To Love

It is my own belief
that real love never dies.
If you fall out of love,
then it was based on lies.
As when you have a child,
and look into her face -
you know for sure your love
could not hate in its place.
And when you love a man,
with love that's truly real,
its more than just a phase,
or something that you feel.
A feeling is a moment,
a passing train at night -
but love is something different.
It will endure, despite
the pain that we may know,
the heartache it may cause,
to love this man forever -
for I believe it was
a love that came before us;
it had a living breath,
waiting for us to find it
in spaces between death.
And when we're gone forever,
our souls escaped from earth,
the same love lives beyond us,
awaiting its rebirth.
So if you find you loved him,
and you no longer do -
it wasn't love you had for him,
but something lost in you.

So often our love is based on a false idea - we falsely believe the other person loves us while he/she was only being friendly - then we fall in love with ourselves - and afterwards find out that person meant nothing by their attentions - heartbreak - but it was a selfish love to begin with and therefore not enduring - but love that comes about through sharing suffering together - that love is eternal and not selfish, I believe - thank you for a most thought-provoking poem, great subject and debate presented in a lovely form!
