First Polish

Of all my faculties I'm happy to retain
the one that lets me glimpse inside the distant past,
It serves as antidote to various kinds of pain
and its capacity can surely be called vast.
The day was balmy and we'd gone across the line,
"Au Canada" was one such place where shoppers thrive,
I searched Vancouver for that Okanogan wine
and there were smiles to share, you loved to help me drive.
Dad I would LOVE to have some polish, do you mind,
I know the colours that would please your eyes as well,
and in the evenings when the time comes to unwind
you'd see me paint it on my nails au naturel.
I was the proudest of all dads, there is no doubt,
we chose two brands, just to be sure you'd be content,
and driving back we took the Aberfeldy route
and watched the hooligans down at the river's bent.
You were impatient as there would be little time,
curfew would come and you were adamant you would
have twenty subjects done painstaking and sublime
not that we doubted you, you know I never could.
I'll stop and shop in that small place in Gastown's west
next time I fly to spend a week or two with Fred,
perhaps they'll sell the same two brands (they were the best)....
do you recall the words the chubby sales clerk said?
"You'll only add to your great beauty, please take care
to keep your fingers real steady with your brush,
then give them all about three minutes in the air
and don't forget that real beauty hates a rush."
