Windswept sea

The wind was howling in the trees
calling to the sea,
but since the wind had left
calm and quiet was she
and that was not so obvious
as her waves broke over me.

The stars shone high above
waiting in the night,
wondering about the fuss
and what might make it right
so they sung a soothing lullaby
then tried to shine more bright.

A silver mermaid came
and played a mystic song,
the sea complained that she had not
done anything that’s wrong
and could not say why the wind
had just got up and gone.

The moon above was most put out
to hear about the fuss,
and all the mice that ate its cheese
said “so say all of us”
the stars joined in and asked the wind
to return, with gentle gusts.

Then the trees they groaned and swayed
said “we’ve seen it all before”
It won’t be so very long they said
the wind will swirl and spin and yaw
until it's lost its angry mood
then sleep upon the floor.

She said "why should I care
what does he mean to the deep blue sea,
he just whips up some waves
and never finds the depths of me"
but when he blustered back
she heaved and sighed and seethed.
