A little poem about identity.

We All Wear Masks

We all wear masks in some shape or form
Some of us have different masks
For different occasions
I am not sure if I know who you are
Your mask hides a reality
I may never know
Is it protection?
Is it fear?
It must be self preservation
If I do not use my mask
I am vulnerable
Exposed for the world to see
Some say they don't wear masks
How would we truly know?
For the most part
There are very few people we deal with
twenty-four seven
Even then do we truly know?
Our masks may be off while we sleep
But then sleep could be a mask!
So much hidden, kept safe
From being judged and shunned
What mask are you wearing right now?

I often find it ironic that even we poets, who claim disavowal of these social constructs - most often represent ourselves with avatars rather than a simple picture :) masks indeed...great write. I've touched on this subject a time or two myself.

Throw the mask away, be yourself everyday. Authenticity is so freeing. Love your thoughts here in this poem.

Masks...are a fine subject. You're right, we do all wear them, and for entirely differing reasons . There are so many masks that at times it's difficult to know the real person beneath. Silliness, pretentiousness, apathy, carefree, caring, benevolent etc etc etc. All of these translate to different identities of characters that we might like to be, or emulate at a particular time. Great piece. Regards Steve

a poem that reaches out to one's heart, Pendemic...The poem rightly challenges one to look within...and the last qn is direct and most necessary. P.S. Love your new profile symbol.

Funny, I wrote a short story about this onces. That people are never really themselves. That they usually morph into the person you think they are when they are close to you. You can see it in almost everybody. Love the methaphores! :o)
