~ appreciating and valuing our differences.... and gathering a beautiful bouquet! ~
~
In God's garden of life,
the obviously beautiful flowers
attract our appreciative eyes.
We are awed at the loveliness,
and wish to keep their image
in our fondest of memories.
~
Is the tulip, in full bloom,
aware of the adoring eyes upon it?
Does it see itself as something
representing beauty,
or simply another piece of someone's
carefully designed garden?
~
The dandelion, however
is seen as a nuisance,
a symbol of ugliness
in a gardener's intended display
of delicate, and colorful petals.
~
How does the strong and beautiful
share space so willingly with something
obviously less attractive and appreciated?
The dandelion tries hard to blend in
and be accepted by those more lovely.
~
Strong and tall, the tulips stand
confident in their value,
and secure in their place.
Beginning as a bulb, carefully planted,
it is a wanted presence year after year.
~
Dandelions have wandering spirits
who are willing to travel far and wide,
seeking anywhere to establish roots,
forcing them deep down in the ground,
hoping to feel secure
in their place in this world.
~
If we, as people, in God's beautiful garden
could see and appreciate
the unique contribution each of us makes,
some more outwardly beautiful than others,
wouldn't it be possible
for this bouquet we are
to bloom longer, and be more fragrant,
than ever before?

(Written May27, 2008)
This past Sunday, our pastor showed us how, by picking only our favorites in life, we sometimes overlook the good in others. We are all God's children, rich or poor, beautiful and loved by him equally. If we only pay attention to our outwardly appearance and associate with those like us, the ones left behind will feel no worth. We are all worthy and picked as a favorite by someone. The most beautiful is unseen by the human eye.
As I sat at the computer this morning, I looked outside to see this dandelion trying hard to grow as tall as the tulips above it. I was quickly brought back to the sermon about acceptance and worth. Although not my favorite flower, the dandelion played just as important a part in making my garden pretty and bright! There was a purpose for this weed, if not just to remind me of what I have recently been taught.
This is a beautiful poem with a deep meaning, great concept, and truths. You know I have always seen tulips so beautiful in velvet color yet since a child I have always been fasinated by a bright dandelion and the freespirit it holds.
