An old Cornish custom known to fishermen's wives - - near their hearth they always had a "fondling stone" which they would sit and hold late at night until their men came home.
The image shows two stones held on the beach but only one was chosen to
fondle for comfort at night while waiting.

Fondling Stones.

Virgin sand.
Moist, and exposing it's secrets
To incessant sea.

In my hand
Polished and warmly round, a smooth
Pebble comforts me.

Coastal land
Offers rewards such as this small
Fondling stone, freely.

Granite band
Girdling the middle means love will
Soon come home to me.

Nothing so grand
As fondling comforting stone,
Soothing, you will agree.
