XENOPHOBIA

I remember clearly standing in a queue
when the first spaghetti restaurant
opened in my home town in the 50s.

As I shuffled closer to the front door
a yobbo and his mates walked past saying,
'cop the fuckin' dago lovers would ya!'

A decade later I invited an acquaintance
to lunch at a Greek eatery. He retliated;
'You've gotta be jokin', me eat wog food?'

Another dacade, another restaurant, Lebanese.
'Reckon it's alright to eat here, these mongrels
eat camel shit don't they?'

Into the 80s.
'Vietnamese? Jesus mate,
these bastards killed my brother!'

When I began my studies of mankind , one of the basic truths that I had to admit to myself was that mankind had made no social advances since he first walked the earth . This poem is but a micro-bit of that basic truth about mankind . As such , it shall remain a timeless piece of writing and a worthy legacy of the man who wrote it . ------------------- Greenwolfe 1962

Your facility with dialogue adds enormously to the punch of this pithy poem about prejudice and fear of 'other'. I've no doubt our new opposition leader, Phoney Tony, will provide ammunition for a new final verse down track. Love, Allie ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
