Have to say #1 was my favorite. I love the smell of the earth after an April shower and new growth is exciting. I enjoyed them all.

Just read a very intersting article the other night on the storied historonics of Haiku, in particular, Zen Haiku, which as most know was the artforms original style, and also which many believe was the 1st birth of poetry. For more than a bakers dozen of centuries, this ancient Japanese form of expressing the beauty and value of Nature has graced us, and like anything else, with the possible exception of Stonehenge Traditional has undergone a few reader-friendly modifications regarding required format. The last was exercised in the early 1800's when Haiku was tailored in an earnest effort to capture the intrigue of poetry lovers that were outside the Asian community. It was thought that if the standard 3 lines which at times were as short as 2 or 3 words were elongated to be more descriptive, that more Reader's would be attracted to this very different form of poetry. They instituted set syllabic requirements for each of the 3 lines, in this order...5-7-5.And, the bottom line is that this concept and implementation worked! The above work which I have labeled as Traditional Zen Style, has been directly modeled from that which was written some 1500 years ago in the area that is now known as Japan. However, as indicated above, the artform has been polished up a bit over the last several hundred years, and hopefully my efforts will eptly reflect that polish....Finally, which I knew nothing about until Karin Anderson brought me up to date, but I heartell that an even newer and far more radically modified form of Haiku has been the recent trend. The newest format called simply and apropriately, "Modern Haiku", lends absolutely no adherence to any syllabic requirement. However, and thankfully to the "Respect" of this Artform as well, of course, our Haiku creators such as Matsu Basho, even Modern Haiku must still be Nature themed and must adhere to it's original 3 line limit.....FjR

I normally hate reading Haikus because I can never find any meaning in them, but these are loaded with beautiful imagery and radiant language that jumped off the page at me. IV was my favorite by far: so vivid!

Hi Frank... thanks so much for sharing these lovely haiku with us. Haiku is one of my favourite poetry forms. I too stick to the traditional English version of 5/7/5 despite it being a Japanese sound-based count. Also, I could never dream of doing haiku with less syllables. Anything shorter I just call a short poem... I try to work with a nature theme for haiku and where people or emotions are involved I refer to those as senryu. These are definitely haiku by my yardstick. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

My curiosity compels me to akd for a translation of those characters. // When I began posting what I called haiku, I was told they were really senryu. I did a little studying and found that senryu can also be called human haiku. Purists want the term haiku to be used just for nature poetry, or at least poems that don't put a person cneter stage. That's what you've done here. // I found in a used book store called Dead Poets a volume of the proceedings of the American Haiku Society, and larned that there is much and even heated debate on the issue of certain poems that could be either haiku or senryu or both. // I enjoy such technical aspects of poetry, but in the end what makes a good poem is the imagery, emotion, music, and meaning. // I enjoyed your haiku. // Here is one from me. // TREE CLOCK / The tree grows green leaves. / Leaves go brown; branches bare; then: / Green. Ticks of tree time. // --Michael LP, Mr. Poet

I like the feeling in haiku based on Zen, but worried by counting syllables. In Japanese, these are sounds and there is no analogue. But every day is a poem is wonderful as an idea. Crystal Lake than silence.

Each one a gem ... they're beautifully ornate. An amazing amount of texture in your haiku. Number III's crystalline image is my favorite, " fields of emerald blade" grass has never sounded so rich and well formed. These were a pleasure to read.

This write Frank was very excellent! I was not making fun of this one. I merely thought it was for everyone to enjoy. Your works here are way above my talents in stature and art. I was not being smart! May God enlighten those in the dark. MJG.

Frank you have excelled yourself with this stunning set of Haikus. Mystical, magical and graceful, each one is written in a different key. I'm trying to choose one as my favorite and it's difficult.. I'm torn between No IV with its sweet Irish lilt and No V, but I think No V is my favorite. Delicate, expressive and utterly enchanting. So thrilled to have found these. Definitely favorites. Love, Allie ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
