I AM STILL

I am still
somewhere someone has just died
somewhere someone has just been born
there are arguments
there is make-up sex
someone chokes on an apple
someone buries a pip and someday
it will be a tree
if concrete isn't smoothed over it
if cats don't pee on it
if the sun doesn't come out ever again
if tomorrow is the last day on earth
then what of today?
what would we take?
her hand in mine, her eyes glittering by firelight
the smell of her, sleeping on my shoulder
lips slightly parted
looking peaceful
and the soft rain falling
hitting the cat bowl
making light tinny sounds
scaring the night
with metal tears
I am still
staring out the window
looking for myself
running through the trees.
