Half a Bubble

Old Jake the politician
is half a bubble off
Oh,he will level with you
but it always has a slant
if he said he will really try
it mostly means he can't

his down hill is flat
his up hill ,the same
he is a half a bubble off
thats his little game

he will tell you its on the up and up
but its always leaning to the left ,or to the right
but you know he can't help it
his screws rant all that tight

Politicians feel they must please people, mouthing the same old crud that they think this group or that group of people want to hear. Most end up talking out of both sides of their mouth, as you note so well here. Nicely done!

Well, the political game is not SO one-sided...My impression is that people, feeling deeply dissatisfied (with the economy and so on) will grasp onto hope, and if a politician fails to provide that hope, he's not a seriously considered candidate. For most people are not all that concerned with truth, whatever their declarations may be. Obama, for example, will never admit that he'll pretty much continue Bush's policies (of the second term), and he already knows he'll fall terribly short of his asserted goals. But that's not my main point here, which is a moot one and certainly open to debate. De Tocqueville was right when he said that the people deserve their leaders. A leader is the representative of those who have elected him, and he will not be very different from them. If he mouths hollow promises, there's a certain hollowness in the people (perhaps a spiritual hollowness) which naturally attracts exploiters and predators.
