VANITY by apploniacriss

Vanity

With the appearance
Of each strand of grey
She shuddered, her age
Was now beginning
To be apparent.
She was quite concerned
About ageing, looks
She believed held sway
Youth was a trump card
Grey hair was clearly
A disadvantage !

Then came L' Oreal
With a whole new range
Of easy to use
Hair colours - relieved
She carefully chose
The right shade to match
Her natural hair
Worry lines faded
But new age issues
Surfaced to ruin
Her peace once again.

This time around, friends
Suggested Botox
Bringing a smile back
On her anxious face.
A quick solution
For nagging fears
She had agonised
Over for long hours over
Could prevent wrinkles
She was now composed
She had the right cure!

This process went on
Until one day when
She changed completely
She was someone else
No one could even
Remember her as
She was meant to be
Then reality
Dawned on her, but it
Was too late for her
To reverse changes..

The lesson she learned-
To age gracefully
and naturally.
Resorting to
Artificial aids,
Will at best delay
The ageing process
Not halt or reverse
Nature's plans for us
These treatments sometimes
End in disaster!

The mind, if not the body, would reject beauty aids like the body in some cases of blood transfusion...aging has its own beauty...good write

Hahaha, wowers, this packs a punch! La, superb!! The issue we all must deal with sooner or later, since if we don't die young we must age. Awesome tribute to reality and dealing with it. Inescapable eventually, aye. I quite enjoyed this. What a reminder, thought-provoking with a delightful sense of humor. Wonderful!

Very interesting poem with lots of truth I must add that speaking of myself what you eat and drink and what exercise you do ends up showing your age ...growing old is fine but sat in an arm chair waiting is a no no as is botox and all the plastic treatment, life is so short that when we do die we are still young...regards

There is a saying... the best make-up a girl can wear is a smile... your poem shows this to be true...

Hi Sandra. I myself have thought the same. Oftentimes, the fuss and worry over wrinkles and such is a symptom of spiritual poverty or lack of inward richness. When we lose touch with ourselves, with our deepest, innermost being, all sorts of worries related to our looks and things external assume gigantic importance.

Sandra, cosmetics are unimportant in the face of a good, kind heart. A most interesting read.

This is so true Sandra. Some of the women who were so beautiful, even as they aged, have destroyed themselves with this hideous plastic surgery. Great write with a very good message..... Pat

Absolutely true Sandra. And yes some and most of the treatments sure end in disaster.

What risks women take to stay young. a visit to a unisex parlour, the beautician confided, these days men , young and old make large percentage of their clientele. Young girls too, naturally glowing, play around with colours, dyes and all. well composed poem on social trends pitfalls,, ageing and lack of graceful acceptance.

That's an honest and realistic look at our human tendency to mature, Sandra...and with a good sense of humor too....Grey is now the on thing - Grey and lines are beautiful!
