Having time to kill, and revelling the lovely world mid-afternoon clearing skies created, I attempted a tribute. Happily the regret of my seeming prevailing moodiness teased that my work could attain a bit of the softer strain even yet.
(sonnet # DXXIII)
How charming light oft makes the world by day
Or night! Behold the wispy brilliant white
In azure's cheer; pines' glist'ring needles' slight
Yet ample beauty; shadows' stretching play
On dead lawns' yellow tan, where th'array
Of firs and silhouettes seem gaily bright
And dark by contrast: winsome now each sight
Appears in golden sunshine's blessing, yea.
Again, agog at stellar clarity:
How marvelous in chilly lunar glow
The looming shapes as sentinels who see
In awesome silence ev'ry furtive foe
Or timid friendly being, entice as lo,
The moon's mystique shines, bathing with that key!
