Skunk Juice?!!

For all my loving coffee tributes, who'd guess that some of my friends actually think differently? They even (playfully?) gave it a name befitting their assessment. Since they "proved" it once to my chagrin, I only wonder how many else might agree? Having failed thus far to offer that contrary view, here it is.

(sonnet # DIX)

I like to call it precious, aye extol
Its subtle pungent, oft seductive scent;
By that aroma's wafting argument
In private ecstasies indulge, its whole
Another matter needing cream's control.
From bitter tamed to tasty, complement
To darling musings, sonnets lately lent,
Their eloquence seems elevates the soul.
But that perspective's mine alone, you see.
While others love it well enough, how few
Contrariwise might read'ly disagree?
Like folk maintaining "caffeine's bad for you,"
Have reckoned coffee smells foul, telling me
It's "skunk juice." Who else thinks that label's true?

Ha ha... If you ask me, your friends are displaying a skunky attitude.

Quite funny, with good comedic timing - you make good use of the line break after L13 to deliver the laugh line, which you aptly save 'til the end to give us distance from the title. And good lines before too: "Another matter needing cream's control" is beautiful. I like the quoted lecture on caffeine as well. I am uncertain if your private passion for coffee is yours alone, although your perspective is by definition entirely yours - I suppose that is the takeaway from that line, that you are entitled to your point of view, which of course you are - although one might infer that not only the perspective, but the details of the perspective are uniquely yours. Strictly true too, but we are not a strictly-thinking species. :) I quibble overlong over a non-issue - the sonnet is terrific, and tells is story well. As for skunk juice. . . well, I've smelled too many skunks and sipped too many coffees to agree.

Love this write, pic of humour indeed. And being a coffee lover and a bit countryfied, I've never confused the scent of freshly brewed coffee to that of a skunk. Terrific penning! tfs

Loved this humourous piece, but as a serious coffee drinker I object to the term"skunk juice" to describe my favourite drink

And all this time I thought coffee came from beans. I had no idea skunks were involved. A wonderful, humorous sonnet Jen. Mrs. Olson would be proud.
