Inspired by Ron Peat's poem on War posted today...
in a cold dark grave
he lies - nourishing the worms
a victim of war
his medals are placed
on the black marble tombstone
the relics of war
the tombstone remains,
a stark reminder of the war
with no lessons learnt
Awesome and poignant tribute to the bloody conflicts mankind indulges in too regularly and eagerly it seems. The first stanza setting the stage, the second the futility, and finally, the third emphasizing it. Excellent with wonderfully expressive imagery. Reminiscent of a grave I used to love visiting, belonging to a lost Civil War soldier, barely twenty. If only we might leave off such engagements.
