I Am They (for Kath & Lynda...and maybe me...)

They say I am he
but I say I am me
He says he is he
as she is she
If They do not know
the difference between
he
she
you or
me
then just maybe I am They
instead of me
or maybe They
are not even They
or me
or us
or anyone at all...

This marvellous poem you have written Keith expresses best the confusion brought about by those who fling accusations around hoping that at some point, one or two might randomly find a basis in fact. It is a nonsensical way to go on, and in all honesty, I wish I had had the guts to stand up to it sooner. I am not guilt free. I was like those described by Martin Niemoeller in his address to Congress - (there are many different versions , one for each day of the week it appears, but here's one) - First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak out for me. I'm honestly ashamed that I did so little to stand up for what I believe. But I hope to have the chance to make amends. kath xxx
