Comforting

Lizzy sat on the porch steps
wearing a flannel shirt and jeans
concealing skin clinging to bone...
by her side her faithful dog leans

Brown and graying her companion
begs to be pet… that was his desire
For the moment Lizzy almost forgot
that her physical well-being was dire

All the years of hard work and toil
gave way to a future that was to be short
In a comforting moment there was only
shared love with nothing more to report

A dog has more compassion/ Than many people do/The world may be unkind/But a dog remains so true/ They smile and wag their tails/ That they love is not so odd/ And if you spell "dog" backwards/ Feel the grace of God
