Great darkness came amit the sunny blaze (cavatina)

Great darkness came amit the sunny blaze
of that high noon,
light the first work of creation was gone
and far too soon
suddenly death came to the Son of God;
companion boon
of mere men He had been, in some weakness
He did come in righteousness to bless.

[Poet’s note: Weakness is here expressed as God coming in the frail human form.]
