Poem Title : An Anthology of figures of speech and rhetorical devices.
Acrostic Poem 166n
An Anthology of figures of speech and rhetorical devices.
Not that a full knowledge is essential but best we try !
Alliteration is one of the poets favourites, each word beginning with the same as like.
Nine nautical Navy Nancies nimbling naughty nights of never, never land.
Tautology ,irritating ,being the repetition of an idea by needless words.
Having to reverse backwards just to be facing the other way as well !
Onomatopoeia , is a splish , splash kinda word that will suggest it`s own meaning.
Litotes as an ironical understatement contradicting the obvious this Poet not without talent.
Oxymoron by linking of the incongruous , this man has to be the wisest of fools.
Getting words to sound not a little ironic and to differ from their literal meaning.
Yet in exaggeration that being so hungry I could eat a hyperbolic horse .
Omission of a word ,an antonomasia, a sudden breaking off for dramatic effect …....
For use of an inoffensive word , I would choose perhaps an amusing euphemism.
For instance ,if a poet dies one would simply say that he had passed away !
I may sometimes ,as I grow old ,repeatedly use a conjunctive just for rhetorical effect .
God and the son of God and even the holy ghost, figure here to great inspiration.
Use of just a single word to apply to two others we only know by name as Zeugma.
Reasoned that if we only applied it to one it would in fact become a Syllepsis.
Even by tmesis , would you ever think of separating just parts of a word( what -things-soever)
Some may go so far as to stand up on their toes and cry “ Abso-blooming-lutely”
On the other hand , to change the subject we have all these pretty ,pretty smilies.
From having lips like rosebuds and so blessed of such kisses sweeter than wine.
Synecdoche use of a name , to refer to a whole ,in the stead of a part as I illustrate...
Principally an example I can refer to is “ Fifty Sail” to describe a fleet of Fifty ships.
Even quoting (As you do) a metaphor as she sailed into the room like a galleon
Every omission of a conjunction ...I came , I saw … I conquered....
Conquered we even have a name for it as seen as an Asyndeton...Oh Yes Indeed.!
Hendiadys the use of two nouns when enjoined by “And”
And used throughout storm and weather instead of through the two.
Nouns proper to refer to an antonmasia such as to be within the clever class of “ Einstein”
Do you ever find you use superfluous words ,as how you would like to have this poem end up.?
Rhetorical questions always being asked in erotema, like “ Isn't a lovely day” ?
Human feelings assigned to inanimate objects ,a pathetic fallacy.
Ever heard that even walls have ears?
To the rhetorical inversion of the normal order.
Of anastrophe words such as full, many a glorious morning I have seen.
Repetition of an anadipiosis word at the end of one and beginning another
In that we waited just for dawn- the dawn that would restore hope.
Can you believe that a Poet I know is eighty years young?
Although read as an ironic antiphrasis , in a sense contradictory.
Like having more haste less speed , an antithesis of expression, contrasting ideas.
Dumb fool or is it that oxymoron , coming to visit us again ?
Evolving into a personification of the jovial moon smiling ?
Very soon , as time and space is running out causing an anacoluthon ending to this poem.
In that it cannot run on and on forever as even an acrostic poem has limits.
Clever figures of speech, and rhetorical devices, are the wisest poets stock in trade
Eventually admitting that the use of the word trade is only a metonymy for experience of life.
Straight thinking, what do we need to know , to make a literary masterpiece of every Poem ?
