A Hint of Carefree Summer!

Ralph will doubtless know which birds, the sparrows? they are that can chatter in January as well as mid-summer. Since I am more accustomed to their peculiar noises from my late teens and summertime bicycling through the countryside they chanced to revive such merry memories (excepting I went bicycling with friends, not exactly alone, except that we were the only ones wherever we stopped on our rides.) Hence this.

(sonnet # CCCCXCVII)

They're chirping just as if 'tis Spring, with cheer
Of sweet mid-Summer in their melodies
The heart well knows, reviving memories
Of lazy days, the countryside's loved sphere,
With fields all round nor e'er another near,
Alone with clear blue skies and whispered breeze,
The dusty road and subtle ecstasies
Who'd dare explain? Beyond. In what I hear.
And naught'd dissuade though th'air's a frosty chill,
The same dear, smiling azure seems now glows;
Though ev'ry tree stands shorn, there's yet a thrill
Held in those darling twitters 'midst the snow's
Mere patches on the green. This tender frill
Transforms, aye charms old Winter, carefree sows.
