Footmarks In The Sand

I strolled beside the water's edge
The sea a ghostly grey,
The clouds hung like a veil of mist
That drew across the bay.

My saddened heart beat like the waves
Upon the restless sea,
As I walked on that windswept shore
As lonely as could be.

My mind was filled with questions
Formed by wells of deep despair,
A broken soul no place to go
Yet found no answers there.

I walked until the tide did turn
And hid the prints I'd made,
Upon the sand I paused and watched
My footmarks slowly fade.

As they were lost I felt the cold
As evening slipped away,
As there I stood and stared upon
The sea of ghostly grey.

Stunning imagery Andrew and the pensive mood throughout this piece is haunting yet beautiful. The disappearance of your footmarks was the sand out part for me and it made me realize how loneliness is so very sad~

Ah, but for all the theme is disconsolate and dismally forlorn, yet laden with lovely imagery conveying the reality poetically, softly poignant and tender, it is too beautiful. I love it. Excellent, superb, impressive, endearing and delightful in a mournful way.

A state of loneliness giving birth to a poem of melancholy reminds of Il Penseraso!
