Ballad Of A Fighter
The bout was a crowd pleaser, sure enough;
The Irish Kid against strongman Ben Pound.
Didn't take long 'til the Kid knew Ben was tough;
Got himself knocked down in the first round.
"Gotta watch his right hand, Kid," Charlie said
As the Kid plopped down on his wooden stool.
"Move to your right, Kid, and protect your head;
Stay away from his right, don't be a fool!"
The next round the Kid did as Charlie said,
Moving to his right, away from Ben's might,
Landing many hard jabs to his foe's head;
It seemed like he could do this all night.
For the Kid, round three went like the last round
With his movement making Ben look silly,
And his feints and jabs which confused big Pound,
But pleased the boxing fans from Philly.
Round four began and the Kid had high hopes
'Til Ben landed an uppercut from hell
That sent the Kid reeling into the ropes.
Luckily, the Kid was saved by the bell.
The Kid staggered back to his corner,
His left eye cut bad and swollen shut tight.
The ref said, "Kid, that eye's 'bout a goner,
But I'll give you one round, then stop the fight!"
"Okay, Kid," Charlie said, "You know it's bad.
You gotta kayo this guy or you're done.
Let's make these good boxing fans proud and glad
They saw you win this big fight tonight, son!"
When the bell rang, Pound wore an evil grin.
The Kid smiled as he dodged strong Ben's big right
While his great left hook arced to his foe's chin.
The ref raised the Irish Kid's arm tonight!
Victor and vanquished can't be decided till the end in boxing! Nice poem transporting one to the boxing ring with great expectation till the end!
