Nightmares

On our isle of dreams,
nightmares linger in the shadows.
They bide their time
until the midnight hour,
then grab us into their world
to embrace us with things
that scare us out of sleep.
Relying on our fears
and making us envisage
that they are our reality.
Deeper and deeper we fall
into their darkness
until we can take no more
and awaken with a start,
sweating and shaking
as if they are our reality
and not merely a nightmare.
