Why O Why

Do you remember the children
And what they all said,
And the never ending rain
Pitter pattering our heads?

Do you remember the sound
Of the babbling brook
Or the hiss and the splash
Of eggs and bacon when cooked?

Do you remember the shadows
The net curtains made
In the evening twilight
When you were just in first grade?

Do you remember that smell
Like warm ginger bread men
Or was it the fragrance
Of that girl when you fell...?
And said “never again”

Why do you think that you will
And why o why
Do you think that you might
Ever forget
In a day or a night?

And why should you ask
Why it happened that way
‘Lest the smell of the grass
Should turn to dry hay?

The smell of everything seemed to be sharper in those days. The taste of everything too.
