woodlouse by Andy Hawthorn

Woodlice

They colonise the compost heap,
they thrive in flowerpots,
they're everywhere you turn a stone,
in all the shady spots.

They're terribly successful,
they skulk around in hosts,
they love all places where it's damp,
they live in rotting posts.

Like tiny armadillos
they roll into a ball,
or else invade your very home
and die there in the hall.

A tribute to the beloved "Roly-polies"!!! I adored them as a child for that delightful way they readily rolled into pepper balls. Nor did I know all you presented here about them. This is too wonderful. I love it. Excellent imagery and rhyming. A delight.

:-( pill millipedes. my little girl, years back, went round trying to roll t'other sort up. thought they just needed to learn how. she was distraught after. & my boy-child, aged 9 months, picked one right up off the floor & ate it. poor little critters. i've always been quite fond of 'em, too. just read this to my two. enjoyed, thank you.
