The sestet ending in such a query, the answer came, hence I chased it into another complementing (hopefully) sonnet. Dinna worry, I have come to see such serious discussions are highly unpalatable. But it is the reply, or at least half of it.
(sonnet # CCCXXXII)
'Tis Truth, I know, though fanciful dreams vie
To make this vain life lighter, and oft do,
For darling moments tease with lies; imbue
The elsewise dull world with such cheer that I
Incline to think them, naughtily, as nigh
Essentials for just living, as since through
Their dear deceitful veil all seen's ne'er blue
But more than passable and sweet thereby.
Until, of course, affliction forces me
To see beyond their guise, which pales and fades
When ill asserts itself; which mocks my plea
For help; their blythe escapes, all masquerades,
Are shadows that quite flee away; their glee
The bitter taste that lingers 'hind charades.
