Pregnant Woman's Foot by BEY CHUA

POLITICS OF PREGNANCY

Who cares for her shattered dreams when she is
Brutally raped on the very first night?
Who cares for her preconception health when,
For him, the only activity is making her pregnant?

Who cares for her repeated abortions
Which results in cervical damage,
Which in turn makes her unable to carry
The weight of a later pregnancy?

Who cares for not to satiate his excessive lust
When she is pregnant, which can cause
Abortion and maternal mortality?

Who cares for prenatal care that can keep
Her unborn baby and herself
Healthy during pregnancy?

Who cares to relieve her excessive work load at home
And her ever expanding stress to provide
High-quality child care for her five or six other children,
From earlier pregnancies?

Who cares for her signs and symptoms of anemia,
Her fatigue, increased heart beat or palpitations
Paleness of inside of eyelids, gums and nail beds
Desire to eat indigestible or peculiar foods?

Who cares for her backache, increasing weight,
Change in her centre of gravity and powerlessness?

Who cares for her malnutrition, poor health,
Lack of education, overwork, mistreatment?

Who cares for her dental hygiene, her broken teeth,
For the baby grows within is another tyrant
Who grabs Calcium, even from her teeth and bones?
Who cares for her cramps and muscle spasm,
Heartburn and indigestion , insomnia?

Who cares for her needs to go to the toilet frequently,
As the growing baby reduces her bladder capacity?

Who cares her inability to get comfortable
When she has neither clean water nor safe sanitation,
And necessary support either from health services?

Who cares not to tense her,
Already she is suffering from all sort of
Tension and high blood pressure?
And her mother-in-law terrifies her again
The consequences if the newborn could be of a girl!
Sad, woman is the greatest enemy of
Another woman, in the most needed times!
If she dies, none is worried...
For he can marry once again!
More dowries, more sex and more kids!

Who cares for her post natal depression ,
As none to take care of the newborn and other kids,
She has to run for office and other workplaces
With heavy breasts, pain and bladder infections?

Who cares that every pregnancy weakens her a lot
As she need some time to recover her health...
And on the very day she can spread her legs,
By force, he starts his activities again!
He knows how how to starve the newborn
Just by emptying her breasts!

When things are like this,
Every religious clergy flays
The limiting of the family size by birth control!
Christians wish for a Christian world
Muslims dream for a new world under Islam
Hindus, Buddhists, Jews and
Every religious fanatic dreams of the same!
They offer gifts for women for bearing
More and more children
For more children is their cheapest weapon!

When will they dream for a HUMAN WORLD?

Healthy children need healthy mothers.
Healthy mothers need healthy food,
Loving husbands (optional!) and caring society
For true world is made of love!

KERALA WOMEN’S CODE BILL

Kerala Women's code bill is a bill which recommends the welfare of women's and children. We are providing the complete recommendations, description, features and details of Women's code bill presented by Justice V.R Krishna Iyer commission Women's code bill is a new bill that may create many controversies in Kerala politics and religious associations. The bill was forwarded to Oommen Chandy, chief minister of Kerala by Justice V.R Krishna Iyer commission.

The commission contains twelve members including V.R Krishna Iyer and the report contains 94 pages. The bill contains many recommendations which may create some movements in religious associations. Kerala Women's Code Bill Recommendations

The Women's code bill main agenda is to lift the living conditions of women and children. The bill contains many recommendations to increase the welfare of women. The main recommendation of women's code bill is limit the offspring by two. If a mother gives birth to a third child then this child will not get any services from government. Moreover if any person or association tries to discourage this program they will be punished by giving fine of Rs. 1000 or imprisonment for 3 months. The Women's code bill also encourages abortion. The Women's code bill recommends free and healthy abortion in Government hospitals. The bill also recommends giving free medically safe contraceptives during marriage. Another important recommendation of Women's code bill is the facility to provide divorce outside the courts. It recommends a marriage officer for giving divorces outside the courts if both parties are willing. Bill suggests that by employing this method, delay for divorces in courts can be avoided. Shelter home for sex harassment victims is another recommendation for Women's code bill. Women's code bill also suggests some postulates for the welfare of children. It recommends state commission for the welfare of children. The bill also has recommendations against accepting donations from children during admissions. It has been proposed to the Government to impose penalty on couples having more than 2 kids in the draft bill for the welfare of women and children. It has also been proposed to the government to withdraw support to families not adhering to this 2-child policy.

The bill has been proposed by a committee presided by Justice V R Krishna Iyar. The controversial recommendations of the Kerala Women’s code bill are contained in the first chapter of the draft bill. The following are the major recommendations:

2 children in a family should be accepted as the common family policy.

Families having more than 2 kids shouldn’t be eligible for monetary aid from the government and legally barred.

Governor should be given power to restrict communities who propagate the idea of having more than 2 children.

A committee should be formed in order to implement this policy and should not be headed by politicians or religious heads.

Families who deliberately break this law should be subject to penalty of Rs 10,000/- or subject to imprisonment for 3 months or so. The policy is sought to be implemented as it was implemented in China. Let’s wait and watch how well it could be put into practice here and how the government and people here welcome it.

Frankly, dear Premji, abortion is murder and murder is not the solution. According to the Word of God, men are to love their wives and wives are to not only love, obey and reverence their husbands, but also be keepers at home, loving their husbands and children. Furthermore, apparently the complete food for each baby is usually given its mother in the milk her body supplies. If women were to keep at home and nurse their children until it was truly reasonable to wean them, apparently the incidence of pregnancy would be naturally curtailed. Mankind however, has devilishly perverted the right way to go and ended up with this nightmare, which again, murder is not the solution to. If we might only follow the way God's Word says, I daresay all would be much better off and this problem would probably cease to exist. La dee dah, what an opinionated paragraph, eh?

Everyone deserve the best. Your portrayal of the suffering of neglected, abused and weakened women as well as the pain of womanhood and motherhood who have fallen prey to the masquerading wolves is so vivid. Well written.

I partly agree with you but wealthy couples who can afford to cater for more than two children should be exempt from this legislation.I don't support abortion except where it endangers the life of a woman.

I like the way you make people aware of a serious matter through your poetic insight. Children were ,are and will be an asset to parents, community, state, country and the world. Humanity owes much to them and health of a country depends upon the health of its children. Exploitation is everywhere. It is just that women always are at the receiving end. Thanks for sharing your thought provoking piece.

Great work. Nice put of the proposed bill. Thank you very much. And the Head line of the policy taken by the Government regarding this issue should be...." Healthy children need healthy mothers. / Healthy mothers need healthy food, / Loving husbands (optional!) and caring society / For true world is made of love!"....Splendid...unique projection of humanity... Flag it high.

Impressive work, ....If you should ever defect o'er to the USA....Ww'll have to get together & talk about me being your campaign co-ordinator, as me thinx u should take a confident jump into the political ring and perhaps with more people like you representing both aisles of Congress....decisions will start being made based on the concertive employment of both HEART & Mind ,oas opposed to just the latter! Excellent penning, my friend as well as an interesting epilogue to punctuate your message ~FjR~

I love your poem dear friend, you actually do something to change the world. I do agree with every point but one, I thought that the ones who want to have more than 2 children would be only cut from the government's monetary help but not become outlawed fined and jailed. There are mothers who wish 3 or four children that should not be a crime if both parents want the child and have the means to care for all the kids..It sounds like from all that Kerala amazing code women's bill the main reason may be the 2 kids policy? Another restriction law for the Woman? Hm..Hope I have only got a misinterpretation. I may be too tired, if so, then sorry.

Zapped by your empathy, sympathy, perspective, progressive thoughtfulness, extreme kindness, I am stunned by your genius of being able to describe for a woman, what even a woman cannot imagine so beautifully. Your poem is explosive and highly esteemed for its expression and pain, its sensitive and thought provoking phrases and most of all most educative and endearing. Thanks premji.

A powerful expression of a poignant theme - a grave social issue that we see in many countries across the world. Many laws have been enacted in many countries favouring women. But sometimes things never change... I am reminded of a quote by Samuel Johnson that goes like this: "Nature has given women so much power that the law has very wisely given them little."

As always Premji, your keen, compassionate heart has missed nothing of what a woman goes through during pregnancy and after.A friend once said to me that invention of pill has liberated women. many valid questions have been raised. You are trying to sensitise society to the plight of women through your work- poems as well as stories. Although many laws are made, sadly not much is done. There is rape in marriage which no one speaks about, and it's not limited to lower sections of society. much can be said, but I'll end here. a really thought provoking write

this is a super write written for women. We the women must take control of our lives and refuse to be used only for child bearing. children are lovely but why have one when there is already 10 at home uncared for. I really don't want their gifts.
