you fell into my life sometime in 1988
and ever since, i have been in love
it was gawky at first, a bit too slow
but you were faster than anything else
i often wondered how you were made
how you thought, what pumped your heart
little questions, curious questions,
but you had smarter answers every year
across time, you became part of me
or did i become part of you, i do not know
it's a blur, but i know you’re my shadow
always around when i am about
for decades, your keys have found my fingers
given body and soul to all my thoughts
whether i wrote an ad, a poem, or a story,
you were resolute, willing and encouraging
you always stayed up, never broke down
no virus tickled you, no hacker got through
you understood me, you were my extension
you said good morning, no matter how tired
you were always ready to ride with me
to take me across the universe, to play songs
you and i watched movies, read the finest words,
did all the things and more that I wanted
i have never found you short, or wanting
and never were you not up to any task
in fact you challenged me, you drove me
the white of your screen, the black of your letters
whenever i opened you, and wherever i was,
you made me look good, and feel good
my life wouldn’t have been as happy
if I hadn’t met and discovered your genius
the thing is steve, you’ll always be here
you aren't gone, you are as alive as ever
though i never knew i’d write your obituary
on the same machine that you created
maybe you saw that, maybe you knew that,
maybe you never knew how much you meant
you haven’t just left behind a legacy,
you have left behind a world more inspired
each one of us have become your friends,
and your ideas have helped us grow and gain
you made us better in a zillion ways,
and turned on a light that can never go out
thank you on behalf of 7 billion people,
and everything else on planet apple
