A very old poem that I've written, re-written, published and unpublished numerous times under several different titles. I was just a kid when I originally wrote it and it's one of the few things I wrote back then that I still have hanging around.
And yes, I know it ends quite abruptly but it's a poem about life. I have found that in most cases, life ends quite abruptly as well.

Overdose

Blue moon rising
the night ushers in
another reality
of curious sin

Ladies in waiting
waiting for love
Leather clad
angels rain Hell
from above

Ashtrays aglow
with paper and fire
People with needles
get higher and higher

Bottles of whiskey
and vials of snow
stand ready and
waiting for those
in the show

A king with a scepter
A queen with a sphere
say over and over
“you don’t belong here”

So you gather your
courage and run for
the door
Reaching the threshold
you fall to the floor

Banging and pounding
you can’t get outside
There’s nowhere to run
and no place to hide.

Here’s where it ends
this thing we call life…

Am glad you said in your intro this poem was written a while ago Patrick as it shows even a youngster can pick up the deadly result which can follow overdosing in wrong sides of life. Agree too with Kath that the pace is superb for the rush towards end lines of desperation. A really fine write.

The tempo you've achieved gives the piece just that right sense of desperate urgency, when life is on the line and it's all come crashing in. The ending is superb - as you say, most lives end pretty suddenly! A very fine poem Patrick, I can see why you've kept it all this time. :) kath xxx
