Loneliness - a senryu suite

on a damp dark night
in flickering candle light
she counts the shadows

the patter of rain
on her windowsill disturbs
her concentration

a lonely victim
of old age in a fast world
the choice is not hers

The images are too talkative Sandra. How come there's no light when poetry radiates warmth all around?

In this senryu triumvirate each is worthy to stand alone, but together they are superb. Love this!

a perceptive comment on times we live in; you sum it up in the last senryu Sandra. It's pathetic how in old age parents have no one to count on. very well captured with compassion

Wow. Superb poignant depiction! Seems so very aptly realistic. How sad. Modern society's problem hit on the head so perfectly, as we all live for ourselves as fast as we can, and then count the shadows alone. Excellent!

I have an eighty-eight year old aunt who lives by herself and she said the one thing she misses is companionship. This poem reminds me a lot of her situation.

In life as we get older for some life shrinks, this is so unnecessary, even though the choice is not her own. A caring thoughtful world, one where everyone is loved, is so needed in our world. You are so right to point this out Sandra. I hope someone smiles at you today.

Well said Sandra ! This site is great for driving away the greater part of our loneliness through interaction ! It has also been my observation that people writing frequently about Love feel its absence in their lives too ! Thanks for sharing , -Raj
