A day in the life of a father............

“I HATE YOU, I WISH YOU WERE DEAD”

“I HATE YOU, I WISH YOU WERE DEAD”
Very harsh words when suddenly said,
From the mouth of a girl that you thought had grown up,
After years of your nurturing and unconditional love.

The sentence itself is enough to kill,
With the same effect as a cyanide pill,
The first three words stop and numb,
The following five are a blast from a gun.

Hate; dislike somebody or something intensely,
A tiny word that can hurt so immensely,
From a strangers mouth just a grain of salt,
But from first born blood causes the heart to halt.

Yes I know that she is only a child,
Perfectly normal for her to act wild
But at eighteen years old and all grown up,
Those words from her mouth give the deepest cut.

Maybe not meant? Just a shot from the hip,
A verbal stumble or an angry slip?
But how would it be if I went to my bed,
Then the very next morning she found I was dead?

Would she be delighted? Dance on my grave?
Or take it all back for my life to be saved?
Imagine the impact on her very young soul,
If the words she spoke achieved their goal!

The moral of the story doesn’t have to be said,
Just try to remember when you lose your head,
Not to wish harm on your temporary foe,
Because on your conscience it could possibly go!

Great read and a word so easily misused.

An excellent poem here Steve, that so well outlines a snippet from mysterious manual of parenthood. There are very few daughters in the world who haven't flung those self-same words at their fathers. They are a part of the script of growing up. She will remember she said them, and she'll always hope her daddy knew she never meant them. :) kath xx

Things said in anger are often regretted and we are all guilty of hurting by verbal outburst at one time or another - maybe this thought helps with the healing. An engaging read friend.

Teenagers are like that..think before you speak is not a motto they adhere to....It is best not to take them too seriously...even though it does hurt...Take care Steve

sad but true. More harsh things are spoken in those heated, angry moments than we'll ever care to take note of. Perhaps that's why forgiveness is such an important thing to learn. tfs
