Alison Cassidy's poetry

The urge to create is universal and I have been tapping into this universal source both as a yoga teacher (for the last twenty five years) and as a performer (actor and musician), since the tender age of five. I am stirred by the same creative spirit when I dig in the dirt of my beautiful Mount Dandenong garden and in the graceful eyes of my new grandson, Dylan Brendan.

I first dipped my toe in the poetic water in May 2006 and have been writing steadily and passionately ever since. Experience is slowly refining my technique and relaxing my need for control, but the initial creative springboard has never changed and continues to fill me with awe.

I enjoy reading other people's works and hope I am able to offer the occasional insightful comment. I am far less judgmental than I used to be when I began.

Poets that have inspired me are A A Milne, Lewis Carroll, William Shakespeare, Dylan Thomas, Les Murray, Bruce Dawe, Sylvia Plath and T S Elliot. I loathe overt sentimentality, hate pretension and am intrigued by the curious and the quirky. I think the most important quality in a poet is to be able to prune vociferously and without attachment.
